Vruja, Croatia

Vruja “The sea, the sea...finally the sea !" - the old legend said – the Croats shouted with joy when seeing the Adriatic sea for the first time from the heights of Dubci.

From this magnificent mountain pass, the steep cliffs dive into the sea at depths of more than 100 meters thus creating numerous submarine caves and deep holes.

WHAT is VRUJA or VRULJA

At the foot of Dubci, in one part of the bay there is a big “vruja” (underwater fresh water springs) that gives the name to the bay. The sources are exceptionally strong during the long rains, and the mix of fresh and salted water attracts big schools of fish for food and reproduction.

DIVING

In addition, the submarine canyons and caves where live numerous sorts of fish, marine sponges and soft corals are ideal for technical scuba diving.

VRULJA BEACH

The beach at Vruja bay is isolated  with gravel and natural pine shade. The water is crystal clear and exceptionally fresh, because its temperature is a couple of Celsius degrees less than in other places on the Adriatic due to the underwater springs.

One part of it is reserved for naturalists.

GETTING to VRUJA

Being surrounded by steep and high cliffs the beach is not easily accessible. You can go there by foot, descending the slopes and enjoying the stunning view of the sea and the island of Brac. Also, it can be reached by following the walk path from Brela but it is better to take a boat from nearby Pisak, Brela, Mimice or Makarska.

WINDS

Thanks to its location between the two mountain massifs, Mosor and Biokovo, Dubci is known for the strong and hurricane winds that succeeded – as says the other local legend – in flooding the town of Pelegrin. Therefore, by night, during the stormy nights, the seamen can still hear the melancholy church bell chiming from the depth of the sea.

A LITTLE BIT of POETRY

In this place, watching at the sea from above the Vruja, Josip Pupacic wrote his famous poem “The Sea”.

THE SEA

and I look at the sea as it foams up to me

and I listen as the sea says good morning

and it listens to me I whisper

o good morning sea I say softly

then again more softly renew my greeting

while the sea listens then laughs

then is silent then laughs then foams

I watch and watch the sea sea gold

and look at the sea how foams to me

and I say good morning sea gold

and good morning sea said

and sea embraced me around my neck

and sea and I and I with the sea gold

sitting together on the beach brow

and laughing laughing at sea
