Mali Rat, Croatia

Mali-Rat Mali Rat, as the adjective of its name indicate ( the adjective 'mali' signifies short and refers to the word `rat' meaning cape – contrary to 'dugi' which means long), is a smaller one of the two brothers.

Their two capes oversee each other from their side of a half-bay they delimit. The two Rat are divided by Orij and Mali Rat stretches in the west till Supetar.

BEACHES

Like all the other places on the coast between Split and Omiš, its upper part is built on the slopes of Mount Mosnjica and the part bellow the Magistral is reserved for the beaches.

They are stretching all along the main Adriatic road, in a very narrow belt, not more than a couple of meters in width.

Mali Rat's beaches are mainly gravel mixed with sand and compared to other beaches in the area they are not even overcrowded during the main season.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in Mali Rat is available in private houses and apartments.

CATERING

The restaurants and grocery shops are situated along the Magistral road. For more important supplies you'll find everything in Dugi Rat or Omis.

HIKING

Hikers and trekkers would be delighted to explore Perun or Poljicka Planina. The ascent begins immediately from the coast because the Mount Mosnjica almost descend to the sea. This small mountain covered with small fields, vineyards, olive trees and interspersed with roads and paths is ideal for trekkers, mountain bikers and all other promenaders.

TRADITIONAL VILLAGES

Up there, at some 250 m you will probably come upon ancient dalmatian villages, nowadays all abandoned but still excellent examples of old rural architecture.

They are also good spots for picnic-goers who could at the same time peacefully enjoy their meals and marvellous view of the sea. They should not, contrary to the ancient inhabitants, fear the arrival of pirates and their plunders that obliged them to live in the mountain during the centuries.

It wasn't until 1960's that the last villagers descended from their tiny villages to built the new settlements on the coast.

FOR WHO?

Although suitable for quiet vacations Mali Rat enables its guests to quickly visit the major tourist centers in its vicinity with whom it has excellent transport links due to its position on the main road. Its principal inconvenience is noise and traffic jams provoked by the heavy vehicle circulation during the high season.
